In this second video from our Social Advertising for Franchises 101 series, we break down the core structure of every Meta ad campaign: the campaign, the ad set, and the ad. Understanding how these three layers work together is essential for creating ads that deliver real results for your franchise.

The Campaign Level

The campaign is where you define your main goal—what you want Meta to help you achieve. Meta offers broad objectives such as awareness, traffic, engagement, leads, and sales. Choosing the right objective tells Meta which audience to target:

  • Traffic: Find people most likely to click links and visit your website.

  • Sales: Reach people likely to click your ad and convert.

At this stage, you also:

  • Name your campaign

  • Decide whether to use A/B testing

  • Turn on features like Advantage Campaign Budget, which distributes your budget across ad sets based on performance

The Ad Set Level

The ad set is where strategy meets execution. Here you determine who sees your ads, how much you spend, and where your ads appear. Key decisions include:

  • Audience targeting: Define locations around your franchise, age ranges, interests, or custom audiences (website visitors or customer lists).

  • Budget and schedule: Choose daily or total spend, and how long the campaign runs.

  • Placements: Decide where your ads appear—Facebook feed, Instagram, Stories, Reels, Messenger, or Meta’s audience network.

  • Optimization goal: Focus on clicks, impressions, or conversions depending on your objective.

The Ad Level

The ad is the creative layer and what most people picture when they think of advertising. Here you:

  • Upload visuals (single image, carousel, or video)

  • Write headlines, primary text, and include a call to action (e.g., Learn More, Shop Now)

  • Link to your website or landing page

  • Test variations in visuals and copy to see what performs best, while keeping your franchise’s voice and branding consistent

How the Three Layers Work Together

  • Campaign: defines your goal

  • Ad Set: controls audience, budget, and placements

  • Ad: delivers your message

Understanding the connection between these layers helps you identify what’s working and what may need adjusting—whether it’s your objective, targeting, or creative. Fine-tuning these elements is key to better performance and higher ROI for your Meta campaigns.
